About Freedom Under Construction
Freedom Under Construction is a citizens' movement started in 2006 by Bhumi in Hyderabad. It is celebrated every Independence day as a 24 hour building marathon, where volunteers come together and spend 2 hours each in building the nation.
It was started with the intention of making August 15th a national celebration.
How we started
In 2006, Rasoolpura Government High School was being used as a garbage dump. Children were attending classes in the midst of filth and stench. To improve conditions for students, 150 volunteers gathered at midnight on August 14th, broke down the crumbling walls and rebuilt three new classrooms.
What we've done so far
In the last 4 years, 2500 volunteers have built 23 government school classrooms, 8 bathrooms, and planted 2300 saplings.
More importantly, 2500 young Indians celebrated their freedom to build India. 2500 young Indians became citizens.
